Grobbins on "The Beatitudes"

The Beatitudes
Jesus Christ gave us the eight Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount, recorded for all posterity in the Gospel of Matthew, the first Book of the New Testament of the Bible. Jesus offers us a way of life that promises eternity in the Kingdom of Heaven. The Ten Commandments, given to Moses on Mount Sinai in the Old Testament Book of Exodus, relates a series of “Thou shalt nots,” evils one must avoid in daily life on earth.

In contrast, the message of Jesus was one of humility, charity, and brotherly love. He taught transformation of the inner person. Jesus presents the Beatitudes in a positive sense, virtues in life which will ultimately lead to reward. Love becomes the motivation for the Christian. All of the Beatitudes have an eschatological meaning, that is, they promise us salvation – not in this world, but in the next. The Beatitudes initiate one of the main themes of Matthew’s Gospel, that the Kingdom so long awaited in the Old Testament is not of this world, but of the next, the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The first beatitude from Matthew does not indicate that simply the only way to get into the kingdom of heaven is to sell all your personal belongings and take a life of poverty. It means do not place high value on material items. Be humble before the Lord for those who are humble in spirit are blessed by God. The poor who are arrogant, deceitful and full of envy have no access to the kingdom of heaven even though they are poor.

Everyday Actions: Be humble before the Lord. Do not be arrogant; rather be thankful for what the Lord has provided. Give thanks every day from the bottom of your heart for the cries of the poor are heard in heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
The easiest way to understand this Beatitude is that Jesus wants you to mourn for your sins. In other words, be sorry for the sins you have committed and ask forgiveness. According to St. John Chrysostom’s Homilies on Matthew, XV, he says: “And again, in this Beatitude, Christ doesn’t speak of those who weep for any kind of causes, but of those who weep for their sins. Any other weep is strictly forbidden, like crying for earthly goods”.

Everyday Actions: Be sorry for your sins. There is not a man born from woman alive that is without sin. Be truly sorry for the sins you have committed and ask for forgiveness every day. Do not mourn because someone else has a nicer car or better job; mourn because you have sinned in the eyes of the Lord and be comforted by the knowledge that by asking for his forgiveness, you will find your place in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
The third Beatitude is a paraphrase of Psalm 37:11. “But the meek shall inherit the earth…”and has no connotation of poverty, meaning a person who is humble and gentle despite his wealth. Moses, for example, was not the poorest of all men, but was the meekest. In fact, the Third Beatitude is a promise for everyone who rightfully serves God and has little to do with amounts of money or quantities of land. Everyone who rightfully serves the Lord must be meek, despite any possible wealth. From the Christian perspective of salvation, the earth inherited by the meek is the “new earth” of salvation described in Revelation 21:1.

Everyday Actions: In essence, don’t be a jerk. Be humble and gentle before the Lord. Look for the good in things rather than always looking for the worst. Cutting someone off while in the store parking lot so you get the closer parking space in not considered being meek! Don’t flaunt what you have and look down upon your brother because he does not have what you do.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
The righteousness described in this Beatitude is a moral attribute of God. The thirsty and the hungry are the oppressed; and their desire for salvation, their yearning for the refuge of Lord, is well described as thirst and hunger after righteousness. In order to make very clear the meaning of this Beatitude, Jesus put it twice in work, as shown in Matthew 14:13-21 and Matthew 15:29-39. The feeding of the masses is associated with their quest for religious and moral perfection. And it was not a reward, but a result: the result of their hunger and thirst for the words of God.

Everyday Actions: Seek out righteousness in the eyes of the Lord. Put your faith in Jesus and he will provide all you need. This does not mean he will provide what you WANT, but what you need. Do not think that because you believe yourself to be a righteous man that you will win the lottery or money will drop from the sky, rather take solace in the fact that your righteousness before the Lord will ensure your needs here on Earth shall be meet. Have faith in the Lord and the Lord will provide.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy
In Jesus’ time on earth, Jews considered mercy as one of the acts of righteousness (together with fasting and praying), and Jesus Himself places “judgment, mercy and faith” among “the weightier matters of the Law” (Matthew 23:23). In order to understand the importance of the Fifth Beatitude, we must understand what mercy is. To put it in few words, mercy is love expressed towards a needy person.

Everyday Actions: Show mercy and love to those in need. Do not look at the homeless man walking down the street with disdain or contempt, but rather show him love and mercy in the eyes of the Lord.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
A sermon preached by J. Stuart Taylor III

St. Mark’s Presbyterian

March 6, 2005

… How do I claim the blessing of the pure in heart when my life might feel splintered into thousands of details and fragments that hardly seem god-like? How do I claim the blessing of the pure in heart when my heart may be filled with double-minded confusion and ambivalence? How do I practice this beatitude in my daily life so that I can experience the blessing of the pure in heart that see God? A wise Christian thinker by the name of Soren Kierkegaard once wrote that purity of heart is to will one thing. To will one thing is not to search through all the big and important things that could be the goals of life and then to decide on one. It is not simply to set one’s priorities and to stay focused. It is not to make anything the one thing. No, wherever a person is in world, whatever road he or she travels, when she wills one thing, she is on the road to God. All ways lead to God if one wills only one thing. What is that one thing? St. Paul said it was to seek the Kingdom of God. Let me say it a different way. Purity of heart is found in the person who seeks to respond to God in all things. Purity of heart is found in the person who seeks to respond to God in all things. If gradually in all things, we begin to will this one thing of responding in love to God, our eyes will be opened, and we will see God. And we will be blessed.

Everyday Actions: Everything you do, do it for God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Purification through vengeance and punishment is, in fact, the final work of peacemaking. Jesus is the Son of God, and through Him every disciple of His shall be called a son of God. This procedure is very well described by Paul:

…because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba,]Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Everyday Actions: As sons of God, led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14 above), we declare who we really are when we avoid quarrels, mend our relationships, care for the sick, free the captives and reconcile people to each other. It is our ability to bless others and to love our enemies that set us apart from the world and all who live according to the flesh.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
There are some encouraging words about persecution in I Peter chapter 4, verses 12-19. If we are living as we should, we should expect to be persecuted, (verse 12). We are even instructed to rejoice that we participate in the sufferings of Christ. We should count it an honor to suffer, even as Christ suffered. Verse 14 says that if you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

Peter warns us not to confuse persecution for righteousness with persecution for other reasons. He specifically mentions three sinful conditions that would cause us persecution: being a murderer, thief, or a meddler. His point? We are not blessed when we are persecuted for sinful actions.

Next Peter tells us that if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. Lastly, if you suffer according to God’s will, commit yourself to your faithful Creator and continue to do good. Don’t be dissuaded by your friends or by the world. Never give up.

Everyday Actions: Rejoice in the fact that you are a Christian and do not be ashamed to spread the word of the Lord for fear of being persecuted. Are you afraid of being labeled a derogatory subject because you have faith in Jesus Christ?

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

This text proved itself extremely important for Christian mentality and life and it was quickly underlined by the Apostles. Peter, for example, says: “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” (1 Peter 4:14).

The ground of the Ninth Beatitude is an older one, expressed by the king and the prophet David, Psalm 119:2: Blessed are they that keep His testimonies and that seek Him with the whole heart.

That is, actually, what the Beatitudes are about: to keep the testimonies of God and to seek Him with the whole heart.

Everyday Actions: Be not ashamed of who you are or your belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. Let those who will persecute you for being a Christian do so in the knowledge that your reward lies in the Kingdom of Heaven.

More on Simon Peter

Accounts outside the New Testament

In Catholic tradition, Peter is said to have founded the church in Rome with Paul, served as its bishop, authored two epistles, and then met martyrdom there along with Paul.

Antioch and Corinth

Later accounts expand on the brief Biblical mention of his visit to Antioch. The Liber Pontificalis (9th century) mentions Peter as having served as bishop of Antioch before his journey to Rome. Historians have furnished other evidence of Peter's sojourn in Antioch. Subsequent tradition held that Peter had been the first Patriarch of Antioch.

He might have visited Corinth, as a party of "Cephas" existed there.

Peter's Death

In the epilogue of the Gospel of John, Jesus hints at the death by which Peter would glorify God (John 21:18–19), saying "'…when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and take you where you do not want to go.'" This is understood as a reference to Peter's crucifixion.

According to the 1911 Catholic Encyclopedia, St. Peter labored in Rome during the last portion of his life, and there ended his earthly course by martyrdom. The death of St. Peter is attested to by Tertullian at the end of the second century, and by Origen in Eusebius, Church History II.1. Origen says: "Peter was crucified at Rome with his head downwards, as he himself had desired to suffer". According to the noncanonical Acts of Peter, he was crucified upside down.

Status

St. Clement of Rome identifies Peter and Paul as the outstanding heroes of the faith. Papias reported that the Gospel of Mark was based on Peter's memoirs, a tradition still accepted by some scholars today.

History of the Church
The Christian Church originated in Roman Judea in the first century AD, founded on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth believed by all Christians to be the Son of God, and the Messiah, or deliverer king, of the Jewish people. The precise start of the Church is considered to be at Pentecost, but it is usually thought of as originating with Jesus' Apostles. According to scripture Jesus commanded the Apostles to spread his teachings to all the world.

Although springing out of the first century Jewish faith, from its earliest days, as did Judaism (see proselyte and Noahide Laws), they accepted non-Jews (Gentiles) without requiring them to fully adopt Jewish customs (e.g. circumcision)Some think that conflict with Jewish religious authorities quickly led to the expulsion of the Christians from the synagogues in Jerusalem, see also Council of Jamnia and List of events in early Christianity.

The Church gradually spread through the Roman Empire and outside it gaining major establishments in cities such as Jerusalem, Antioch, and Edessa. Christianity became a widely persecuted religion, hated by the Jewish authorities as a heresy, and by the Roman authorities because, like Judaism, its monotheistic teachings were fundamentally foreign to the traditions of the ancient world, as well as a challenge to the imperial cult.Other teachings of Christianity, such as the call to chastity and the prohibition on homosexual practice, also made it unpopular. Despite this the Church grew rapidly until finally legalized and then promoted by Emperors Galerius and Constantine in the fourth century. A major controversy as the Church was being formalized was the Arianism vs. Trinitarianism debate which occupied the Church during the fourth century.

After various Church councils (Nicaea, Tyre, Rimini, Seleucia, Constantinople, etc.), the matter was effectively settled by the Trinitarian Emperor Theodosius I who made Christianity the state religion (some Germanic tribes, though, remained Arian well into the Middle Ages). This period would begin the long-term persecution of pagans and "heretical" Christians in the Empire and the kingdoms that followed. See also Christendom.

Spiritual authority

It is a widely held belief among Christians that the Christian church is guided by the Holy Spirit and given spiritual authority by Christ.

According to Christian tradition the "authority" of Jesus Christ to preach, to teach, and to do all the things that He had done while on Earth came from God. Before Jesus Christ ascended to Heaven He had given His apostles and disciples the authority to preach (that may include teaching, exhorting, rebuking, correcting) and to baptize. This "authority" was passed on by the apostles to the disciples, and was to be passed from one generation of disciples to the next until His second coming. The passing on of this authority had been conducted solely by the church. This passing on of authority was sometimes called the anointing or appointing of pastors or leaders of a church.

Membership in the Christian church has traditionally been defined by baptism. The church administers Christianity's sacred acts: baptism, the Lord's supper, worship, etc.

Pilate in the Apocrypha
Little enough is known about Pilate, but mythology has filled the gap. A body of fiction built up around the dramatic figure of Pontius Pilate, about whom the Christian faithful hungered to learn more than the canonical Gospels revealed. Eusebius (Historia Ecclesiae ii: 7) quotes some early apocryphal accounts that he does not name, which already relate that Pilate fell under misfortunes in the reign of Caligula (AD 37–41), was exiled to Gaul and eventually committed suicide there in Vienne.

Other details come from less respectable sources. His body, says the Mors Pilati ("Death of Pilate"), was thrown first into the Tiber, but the waters were so disturbed by evil spirits that the body was taken to Vienne and sunk in the Rhône: a monument at Vienne, called Pilate's tomb, is still to be seen. As the waters of the Rhone likewise rejected Pilate's corpse, it was again removed and sunk in the lake at Lausanne. The sequence was a simple way to harmonise conflicting local traditions.

The corpse's final disposition was in a deep and lonely mountain tarn, which, according to later tradition, was on a mountain, still called Pilatus (actually pileatus or "cloud capped"), overlooking Lucerne. Every Good Friday, the body is said to reemerge from the waters and wash its hands.

There are many other legends about Pilate in the folklore of Germany, particularly about his birth, according to which Pilate was born in the Franconian city of Forchheim or the small village of Hausen only 5 km away from it. His death was (unusually) dramatised in a medieval mystery play cycle from Cornwall, the Cornish Ordinalia.

Pilate's role in the events leading to the crucifixion lent themselves to melodrama, even tragedy, and Pilate often has a role in medieval mystery plays.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Claudia Procula (Pilate's wife) is commemorated as a saint, but not Pilate, because in the Gospel accounts Claudia urged Pilate to have nothing to do with Jesus. In some Eastern Orthodox traditions, Pilate committed suicide out of remorse for having sentenced Jesus to death.

Gospel of Peter
Main article: Gospel of Peter

The fragmentary apocryphal Gospel of Peter exonerates Pilate of responsibility for the crucifixion of Jesus, placing it instead on Herod and the Jews, who unlike Pilate refuse to "wash their hands". After the soldiers see three men and a cross miraculously walking out of the tomb they report to Pilate who reiterates his innocence: "I am pure from the blood of the Son of God". He then commands the soldiers not to tell anyone what they have seen so that they would not "fall into the hands of the people of the Jews and be stoned".

The Pilate Stone
The first physical evidence relating to Pilate was discovered in 1961, when a block of limestone was found in the Roman theatre at Caesarea Maritima, the capital of the province of Judaea, bearing a damaged dedication by Pilate of a Tiberieum. This dedication states that he was ECTVS IUDA (usually read as praefectus iudaeae), that is, prefect/governor of Judaea. The early governors of Judaea were of prefect rank, the later were of procurator rank, beginning with Cuspius Fadus in 44.

The inscription is currently housed in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, where its Inventory number is AE 1963 no. 104. Dated to 26–37, it was discovered in Caesarea (Israel) by a group led by Antonio Frova.

Being a Christian

Everything necessary for being and behaving as the Christian one has become is inherent within and derived from the One with whom we have spiritually identified and united, Jesus Christ. Being and living as a Christian is not a religious exercise of conformity to the example of the historic life of Jesus Christ, striving to be Christ-like. Attempts to pattern one's behavior after that of Jesus amount to nothing more than self-serving attempts to "parrot" or "ape" the behavior-pattern of another. The Christian life is not an imitation of Jesus, but the manifestation of His life and character in our behavior, "that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal body" (II Cor. 4:10,11).

Living the Christian life is not comprised of going through the motions of repetitive religious rituals. Nor is it the legalistic keeping of behavioral rules and regulations in conformity to an ethical morality. Ecclesiastical involvement is not the essence of Christian living either; not church attendance, participating in religious programs, or tithing ten-percent of one's income.

Being and behaving as a Christian is enabled and empowered by the grace of God in the dynamic of the life of Jesus Christ in the Christian. In His departing promise Jesus explained, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you" (Acts 1:8). "God's grace is given according to the working of His power" (Eph. 3:7), providing "all sufficiency in everything" (II Cor. 9:8). Therefore, consistent with our becoming a Christian, it is not what we do to behave and live as a Christian, but the recognition of the sufficiency of the life of Jesus Christ within us. "He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus" (Phil. 1:6).

Jesus said, "I came that you might have life, and have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). "I am the life" (John 14:6), Jesus declared. The Christian can affirm with Paul that "Christ is our life" (Col. 3:4); therefore, "for me to live is Christ" (Phil. 1:21). The Christian life is the "saving life of Christ" (cf. Rom. 5:10), whereby we are "made safe" from dysfunctional humanity in order to function as God intended by the divine impetus of Christ within the Christian.

By His Holy Spirit, the living Lord Jesus wants to fill us (cf. Eph. 5:18) and control our behavior in order to manifest His character. This is not ethical conformity to a Christian value-system, but is the manifestation of the "fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Gal. 5:22,23). Thereby we allow for His holy character to be expressed in the process of sanctification (cf. I Cor. 1:30; I Thess. 5:23).

Because we have such a performance-oriented, work-ethic mentality of accomplishing the objectives of any task, there is a constant tendency among Christians to question their responsibilities, what they must do, to live the Christian life. It is not what we do, but what He does that constitutes the living of the Christian life. Jesus told His disciples, "Apart from Me, you can do nothing" (John 15:5). Paul, a religious activist if there ever was one, admitted that "we are not adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God" (II Cor. 3:5).

Being the Christian we have become is not effected by increased dedication and commitment to God or the church. Nor is Christian growth and behavior enacted by "studying to show oneself approved to God" by the gnostic acquisition of additional biblical and doctrinal knowledge. Emotional experiences do not make one a better Christian. Participation in activistic causes, or serving the Lord in ministry or missions opportunities are not creditable means of enhancing the Christian life. God is "not served with human hands, as though He needed anything" (Acts 17:25). Paul credited Christ for everything in his life and ministry, when he wrote, "I do not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me" (Rom. 15:18).

"As you received Christ Jesus, so walk in Him" (Col. 2:6), wrote Paul. How did we receive Christ Jesus in order to become a Christian? By faith! In like manner, then, the Christian is responsible to continue to make the volitional choices moment-by-moment to allow for the receptivity of Christ's activity in our Christian lives. Such receptive faith allows for the vital outworking (cf. James 2:26) of the life and character of Jesus Christ in our behavior. "Christ lives in me," Paul explained, "and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me" (Gal. 2:20).

What does it mean, then, to be a Christian? Christianity is Christ! A Christian is one in whom Jesus Christ lives by His Spirit, and one who allows the life and character of Jesus Christ to be lived out through his behavior, in order to function as intended to the glory of God (cf. Isa. 43:7).

Over the past months as I went from non-believer to salvation to baptism, I often asked myself "What does it mean to be a Christian"? "What do I do?".

In order to help others, I have found many places across the internet that helps explain this and thought I would share this with you.

Peace in Christ,

Gerry
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN?

There is much confusion among the general public, as well as the religious community, concerning what it means to be a "Christian."

Does it mean assenting to a particular belief-system?
Does it mean consenting to a prescribed morality pattern?
Does it mean changing and improving one's behavior?
Does it mean joining a church organization?
Does it mean practicing regular rituals of worship?

Even those who call themselves "Christians" seem to have much difficulty articulating and verbalizing what it means to be a Christian. Their ambiguous explanations often convey an amalgamated "mish-mash" of affirming the above-mentioned activities.

What is needed is a clear Biblical restatement of the basic spiritual reality of being a Christian. That will be our objective in this study.

In order to do so, we will divide the study by differentiating what is involved in becoming a Christian initially, and what is subsequently involved in being the Christian one has become. Thus we can consider both the commencement and the continuance of what it means to be a Christian.

Becoming a Christian

We are not referring to "getting religious," or "joining a church," or "believing and reciting correct creedal doctrines." The issue we address is "becoming a Christian."

What must one do to become a Christian?

In one sense, there is nothing anyone can DO to become a Christian. Everything necessary to become and be a Christian has been done by Jesus Christ, which is why He exclaimed "It is finished!" (John 19:30). It is only by the grace-activity of God in Jesus Christ that the opportunity of becoming and being a Christian is afforded to mankind. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast" (Eph. 2:8,9). There is no human performance or effort that can effect the spiritual reality of becoming a Christian.

Becoming a Christian is not a matter of external physical attachment to a social organization called a "church." Nor is becoming a Christian effected by mental assent to historical or theological tenets of belief. Behavior modification and ritualistic repetition are not the essence of becoming a Christian.

Becoming a Christian is a spiritual reality that transpires in the spiritual core of our being. Our "spirit and soul and body is to be preserved complete" (I Thess. 5:23) in Jesus Christ. The most basic need of man is not physical rejuvenation, or psychological adjustment, or social improvement, but spiritual exchange and regeneration. Because all of mankind begin their physical lives spiritually "dead in their trespasses and sins" (Eph. 2:1,5), the primary need of man is to be made alive spiritually.

The figurative expression that the Bible uses to illustrate spiritual enlivening is the concept of being "born again" (I Peter 1:3,23) or being "born from above" (John 3:3,7). When Jesus told Nicodemus, the religious ruler of the Jews, that he needed to be "born again, from above" (John 3:1-7), he reverted to the literalism of physical obstetrics. As a "natural man," though extremely religious, he failed to understand spiritual things (I Cor. 2:14).

Man's primary need is not more knowledge and education, nor is it self-realization and self-improvement. The need of man is to be re-lifed with the very life of God in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. The Spirit of God gives life (II Cor. 3:6) to our spirit, causing our spirit to be alive (Rom. 8:10) with "newness of life" (Rom. 6:4). One who thus becomes a Christian "passes out of spiritual death into spiritual life" (I John 3:14).

The spiritual life that the Christian receives is the divine life of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). "He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life" (I John 5:12). This "eternal life that is in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 6:23) is the spiritual life that Jesus came to bring (John 10:10) to restore man to God's intent for humanity. Eternal life is not a commodity or state of existence that we receive after we die physically, but is the life of Jesus Christ in the Christian presently with an eternal continuum of perpetuity.

Spiritual re-lifing, or regeneration, occurs in the spirit of man. "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6). "The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Rom. 8:16). A spiritual union is effected whereby "one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him" (I Cor. 6:17).

The singular reality that constitutes becoming a Christian is the presence of the Spirit of Christ in the spirit of an individual who receives Him by faith. "If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him" (Rom. 8:9), i.e. he is not a Christian!

This indwelling of the Spirit of Christ in the spirit of an individual is the life and presence of the Person and Being of the risen Lord Jesus. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to evaluate whether they were really Christians, by asking, "Do you recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?" (II Cor. 13:5). The spiritual mystery of the gospel is "Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Col. 1:27); the basis on which Paul declares, "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me..." (Gal. 2:20).

When a person is "in Christ" and Christ is "in them," they become a "new creature" (II Cor. 5:17), a "new man" (Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10), raised to "newness of life" (Rom. 6:4) by the presence of Christ's life in their spirit. They have a new spiritual identity as a "child of God" (Jn. 1:12; I Jn. 3:1,2,10), "sons of God" (Gal. 3:26), Christ-ones or Christians.

How does this spiritual reality transpire? How is it enacted or facilitated? There is no physical or psychological procedure or formula that one must follow precisely in order to become a Christian. It is not effected by the physical procedures of walking down an aisle in response to an invitation, or holding up one's hand, or repeating a pre-worded "confession of faith," or being baptized with water, though those may be engaged in to indicate or accompany one's response to Jesus Christ. Neither do the psychological responses of mental assent to historical and theological tenets, or the subjective experiences of human emotions constitute the means and manner of responding to Christ.

Becoming a Christian is personally appropriated by coming unto God in faith. Faith is not believing the accuracy of certain data about Jesus Christ, nor is it having an existential experience of ecstasy. Rather, faith is a volitional choice of receptivity to the activity of Jesus Christ, willing to receive the redemptive efficacy of Christ's death on our behalf, and willing to receive Christ's life into our spirit. "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born...of God" (John 1:12,13). "Having believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise" (Eph. 1:13).

Every person who receives Jesus Christ and becomes a Christian is assured of Christ's spiritual presence and empowering. "Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matt. 28:20), Jesus declared. "Christ, the power of God" (I Cor. 1:24) "works within us" (Eph. 3:20).

My co-worker Cindy Eschendal comes from a large family. Last week a younger brother was found dead in his home and the funeral was last Sunday. Yesterday another brother was found dead. She has her mother living with her since her father passed away about a year ago. Her mother has alzheimer's and cannot remember the boys who have passed away. Cindy and her family need a lot of prayer.

I don't believe that Jesus loved Peter above the others. In fact, it is typically believed that John was "the disciple Jesus loved." When names are listed in the New Testament, they are done so in order of importance, so that would indicated that, next to Jesus, Peter was probably the leader of the disciples. He certainly becomes the most prominent of the disciples as the New Testament continues.

I think Peter (and the other disciples, other than John who stood by as Jesus was crucified) deserted Jesus out of panic, fear, and a sense of simply not knowing what to do. Jesus had been with them every step of the way for three years, and now they were suddenly on their own with no one to guide them. It isn't until after Jesus sends his Holy Spirit to dwell within us (Pentecost) that the disciples are empowered and fully able to do the work of Jesus without him there with them.

I have some questions about Simon Peter as it relates to our study of a Walk with Christ to the Cross...

In Matthew 16:18, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

Does this phrase indicate that Jesus is assigning Peter a leadership role within the disciples? And... is it true that he was crucified head down? John 21:18–19

According to Matthew 8:14–17; Mark 1:29–31 and Luke 4:38 added to 1 Corinthians 9:5 it seems to suggest that Peter's mother-in-law was healed by Jesus at their home in Capernaum.

Additionally, it is interesting that Peter is always listed first in the list of Apostles. Could this be more proof of Jesus' love for Peter?

The denial of Christ by Peter confounds me. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus' prediction of Peter's denial is coupled with a prediction that all the apostles would be "sifted like wheat," but that it would be Peter's task, when he had turned again, to strengthen his brethren. In John's epilogue, Peter affirms three times that he loves Jesus.

Additional facts about Peter:

- He is the only Apostle to check the empty tomb for himself
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 Paul says, "he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve."

With all of the facts I have read about the love Peter had for Jesus and his ministry, I find it hard to believe that Peter denied Christ because he no longer loved him or because he didn't want to be associated with him, but rather because he was angry and felt betrayed by Jesus because he loved him so and did not want him to go through with the trial and crucifixion.

Every thing scripture tells us is that Judas did what he did of his own mind and free will. It was not a conspiraacy between Judas and Jesus for Jduas to betray Jesus. Before the betrail in the Last supper Jesus knowing what Judas was going to do offered Judas a peace offering acknowledging that Judas did not have to go through with the betrail.
In the garden before Jduas ever identified Jesus said three differnt times that he was the one they sought before Judas ever kissed. Giving Judas another out.
Jeus claimed that he gave his life freely. He didn't need Judas to help him.
Judas own character betrays him. He pilfered money from the treasurey of which he was the keeper. He chastied the woman who washed Jesus feet with her hair all the while he was stealing.
The book of Judas where some of this theory comes form has not been substaniated as having any credibility. so not to be believed.
Ther are alwayas theories and what not as to try to destroy the person as work of Jesus . If there is any thing aout there \taht can destroy the work and [person of Jesus Christ then salvation and Jesus become unneccessary. then anything goes.

The text of the Gospels suggests that Jesus both foresaw and allowed Judas' betrayal. In April 2006, a Coptic papyrus manuscript titled the Gospel of Judas dating back to 200 AD, was translated into modern language, to add weight to the possibility that according to early Christian writings, Jesus may have asked Judas to betray him.

While most people look upon Judas as a betrayer my question is did Judas betray Jesus to fulfill the prophecy against his own will?
